Nepal is one of the least developed countries in the world. A quarter of the population lives under the international poverty line, while 46% is unemployed. Thousands of people die every year due to malnutrition and diseases resulting from dire living conditions, with limited access to healthcare preventing recovery. HIV/AIDS is an increasing problem with 50,000 people living with the disease, and Nepalese society is blighted by poverty, illiteracy, gender inequality and poor education.
